What is Section
508 of the Rehabilitation Act?

BY: INVID

When a company creates or implements an Internet portal, it must consider the specific requirements of Section 508 to ensure accessibility for individuals with disabilities. The Rehabilitation Act’s Section 508 (29 USC 794d) specifies that federal agencies’ electronic and information technology (EIT), including portals, are accessible to people with disabilities. These standards are designed to guarantee that everyone has equal access to information and functionality.

To achieve compliance with Section 508, corporate portals need to consider several accessibility features. This includes ensuring that individuals with disabilities can access information, navigate the portal, and interact with its components. Some essential requirements involve providing alternative text for images, designing accessible tables, and ensuring compatibility with assistive technologies.

It’s important to note that Section 508 compliance is not just required of federal agencies. Other groups, including governmental nonprofits, educational institutions, and schools, must also follow these accessibility standards. Additionally, many businesses voluntarily adhere to these rules to encourage diversity.

Organizations should refer to the most recent guidelines and updates released by proper authorities, as the particular needs and standards for accessibility may vary over time. When assessing the accessibility of goods or services, instruments like Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPATs) can be helpful.

There is also a law in Puerto Rico called Law 229, “Law to Guarantee Access to Information for Persons with Disabilities.” According to this law, corporate portals must make it easier for people with disabilities to access the information and services provided by the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico’s government. It provides a public policy to enforce adherence by state agencies, businesses, and other public entities.
