Technology Trends: 3 Benefits of 5G for Everyone

BY INVID

Even the most astute observers of technology trends can sometimes have difficulty distinguishing what will significantly impact the coming years and what is relatively minor. For example, in 2009, James Cameron’s Avatar was supposed to usher in a wave of 3D movies and 3D television. Companies started producing, showing, and creating the equipment for 3D content. 3D TV was going to be the next big thing. Fast forward 12 years later, and 3D TV is dead.

However, one of the more recent technology trends, 5G, is most definitely here to stay (until 6G, or whatever the next generation is, takes its place). Networks all across the globe are investing heavily in this technology. Here are the three benefits of 5G for individuals and companies alike!

Of the Technology Trends, This One Gives Epic Mobile Internet Speeds

One of the most significant benefits that every user of 5G will feel is the increased internet speed. In the United States and around the world, most people have 4G or LTE phones. The old 4G standard had a minimum 100 Mbps download speed, but that minimum was hypothetical. Even if the cell phone had perfect reception, most carriers’ backbone infrastructure couldn’t support these fast connections.

The new 5G standard has a hypothetical minimum of 1 Gbps, 10x faster than the old 4G standard! Of course, like 4G, carriers cannot hit that yet. With more investments, though, they’re always getting closer!

Regardless, 5G offers a faster download speed, making everything much smoother – from checking corporate email to buying a plane ticket to Hawaii!

5G Promises a Lower Latency

4G’s latency was significant. The average latency was 50ms which is fine for general browsing and checking emails. However, as more people use their phones as tethered internet connections or stream or game with them, this latency becomes problematic. Many gamers want latencies below 30ms.

5G promises to (again, hypothetically) reduce latencies to as little as one millisecond! With a 1 Gbps throughput and 1 ms latency, this makes 5G a legitimate, viable household internet connection option for everyone in the household or company – including gamers!

Enhanced Capacity

A significant issue with 4G was the challenge of building the infrastructure necessary to support its use. There was only so much capacity that the cell towers could support for connected devices.

5G promises to boost that capacity significantly, making it one of the more exciting technology trends. Indeed, the increased bandwidth and low latency, combined with the capacity, opens up numerous IoT use cases. Multiple 5G-connected sensors on a robot? Yep, that’s now a possibility that wasn’t there with 4G. Having household or corporate video recording security systems uploading to the cloud? Again, that’s another use case that’s much easier with 5G!

The enhanced capacity opens up a world of possibilities, previously unthinkable (or, perhaps more accurately, far slower and less reliable) on 4G connections.

5G Is One of the More Exciting Technology Trends

There’s no question that 5G is one of the more exciting technology trends! With increased speed, decreased latency, and enhanced capacity, 5G will undoubtedly dominate the cell phone landscape throughout the coming years. Major players like Apple and Google are already producing 5G-compatible phones.

As such, while 3D TV may have been a flop (as were countless technologies before it), there’s no doubt that 5G will continue to be a resounding success as adoption increases.
